What is an ATS, and why does it reject good résumés?
An Applicant Tracking System (ATS) is the software companies use to receive, sort and search job applications. Workday, Taleo, iCIMS, Greenhouse, Lever, SuccessFactors, Zoho Recruit and the software behind Naukri and LinkedIn job posts all work the same basic way: they turn your file into plain text, split it into sections, and let recruiters search and rank candidates by keywords.
The problem is the first step. If the software cannot read your file cleanly, your experience lands in the wrong place or disappears. A recruiter searching for "Python" or "GST" never sees you, even if you are the best fit. Nothing is wrong with you; the layout simply did not survive the robot.

- Use one clear column and standard headings: Summary, Work Experience, Education, Skills.
- Keep your name, phone and email in the body of the page, not in the header.
- Export to PDF from Word or Google Docs; never scan or save the résumé as an image.
- Start each point with an action verb and add a number: people, money, time or percentage.
- Mirror the exact skill names from the job description where they are true for you.
- Leave out date of birth, marital status, religion and a photo unless the employer asks.
